Hoop for Haiti is an independently organized fundraising Muslim men’s basketball tournament, in collaboration with The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago and MSA Chicago.  We as Muslims have a fundamental duty to reach out and help those in need.  The goal of this project is to work with inner-city MSA’s to raise as much funding for the Haiti disaster relief fund as possible, while exemplifying brotherhood and Islamic ideals. 

Fundraising:

We will raise money through tournament registration fees and reaching out to local businesses and organizations to sponsor teams and/or the event, and donate to the cause. 

Tournament and Fees:

The tournament will be 5 on 5 with a 7 man cap on each team’s roster.  We will monitor registration on the website and then post a cap on the number of teams if need be.  Each team will play a minimum number of exhibition/regular season games.   All teams will enter the playoffs based on their records from the regular season in a single or double elimination bracket (to be announced after registration is complete).  All details about the schedule and bracket will be posted after registration is complete. 

The primary goal of Hoop for Haiti is to help Haitians in need and this should be the primary intention of all players as well.  InshaAllah we will all have a memorable experience.  There is a $70 registration fee per team.  A payPal account is necessary in order to make the payment.  You will have to pay online at the time of registration in order to be in the tournament.

Islam came at a time when women all over the world were being oppressed and exploited. The most any society would accord the woman was to admit that she was part of the human race. They never admitted her dignity or gave her rights and responsibilities equal to those of men. The Greeks considered her to be an object of pleasure and amusement. This view was articulated in the classical texts most unambiguously:

We take prostitutes for pleasure, lovers to care for our daily health, and wives to give us legitimate children.

The Romans gave the father and husband the right to sell her to whomever they pleased. The Arabs gave the son the right to inherit the wife of his father (not his own mother) just like he would inherit his father’s wealth and his steed! That is if she were lucky enough not to have been buried alive at birth. This was the case with the rest of the world’s societies at that time, like those of the Persians and the Hindus.

The Bible is a collection of writings by many different authors. The Quran is a dictation. The speaker in the Quran - in the first person - is God talking directly to man. In the Bible you have many men writing about God and you have in some places the word of God speaking to men and still in other places you have some men simply writing about history. The Bible consists of 66 small books. About 18 of them begin by saying: This is the revelation God gave to so and so… The rest make no claim as to their origin. You have for example the beginning of the book of Jonah which begins by saying: The word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Elmitaeh saying… quote and then it continues for two or three pages.

An Islamic Point of View

Prior to the modern age very few people disputed the fact that the world has a creator. This fact was for them as obvious as a logical truth or an observed phenomenon. They only differed about the nature of this creator and about the appropriate attitude people should have towards Him. But now the very existence of a creator is disputed. Why? This is not an easy question to answer.  However, I tend to agree with those contemporary writers who trace the origins of modern atheism in the West to the ideas of some influential Western philosophers, some of whom were themselves believers. But these ‘believer’ argued in such a way as to make people at least doubt , if not reject, some of the facts belief in which used to be considered of the essence of being rational . Good reasons for belief in the Creator, whether they be strictly rational or otherwise, used to be related to those facts.

The clergy had their own distinctive clothes. In those ages the power of the church was equal and at times opposed to that of kings and emperors. The Pope claimed that it was he who confer­red power on kings but they strove to get rid of his influence in order to rule independently. Owing to the property donated by the religious people and the exactions imposed on them, the church became so rich that at times it could have armies of its own. On the other hand, the nobility inherited nobleness from their forefathers and passed it on to their descendants. A man belonged to the nobility by birth and remained as such until his death regardless of whatever noble or mean actions he might have done in his lifetime.
